Sisters Take On… "Healthy" Smoothie Recipes

So, this happens to be the start of a brand new series called “Sisters Take On…” – a review series with a twist!  In this series, I will bring my sister in to review try something with me and we’ll each give our opinions.  Why?  Because we’re two very different people… You see, there’s:
Me… A 19 year old detail-oriented early-bird with a compulsion to be busy all the time, who loves new experiences and trying new things.
and then there’s…
My Sister… A 15 year old girl who loves sleeping in, computer games and photography, would never leave the indoors if she could, and doesn’t like branching out from what she knows and likes.
So between the two of us you’ll get the point of view of a fussy teen contrasted with that of an open young-adult.  Our starting topic?
Smoothies!
Over 5 days we tried 5 different smoothies for breakfast, which I had either researched recipes for or compiled myself based on what I’d read about the different ingredients.  With each smoothie we rated them out of 5 on:

  • Taste
  • Health factor
  • How filling
  • Likelihood to drink again

Giving each smoothie a combined rating out of 40 between the 2 of us…  So, without further ado, here are the results, ranked from highest to lowest:
 
1) The Peanut Butter One
(Promises to be very filling and the “perfect breakfast smoothie”)

  • Blend:
  • banana
  • 1 cup semi-skimmed/almond milk
  • 3 tablespoons peanut butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • half cup ice

My Review…
I really loved this! I love peanut butter milkshakes however they can be quite unhealthy, so to find a healthier alternative is very exciting!  If you like peanut butter and bananas, this is a great one!

Sister’s Review…
I don’t like the taste of peanut butter, however I could really taste the honey and the honey made up for it!  One of the few smoothies here that I willingly finished.

2) The One that Helps you Wake Up
(Incorporates caffeine and banana in order to keep you full and awake)

  • Pre-prepare 1 tbsp coffee with water and sugar (to taste) and cool overnight in the fridge
  • Blend:
  • The coffee mixture
  • frozen banana
  • 1 cup almond milk

My Review…
This one is a tried and tested favourite of mine.  It gives me the boost of coffee without the overpowering coffee taste, and banana milkshakes always used to be a winner for me!

I don’t like coffee, and you could taste the coffee too much for my liking.

3) The “Worlds Best Smoothie”
(This, not only titled itself “the world’s best smoothie”, but promised to keep you full until lunchtime)

  • Blend:
  • 1 cup non-fat yoghurt
  • banana
  • frozen strawberries
  • Half cup orange juice

My Review…
I’m not a big fan of yoghurt based drinks but this wasn’t the worst!  However, I feel that the mix of orange juice and yoghurt made the drink more sour than it needed to be… I’d recommend adding a tablespoon of honey or something.  As for being the “World’s Best Smoothie”… I wouldn’t go that far.

Sister’s Review…
With a whole cup of yoghurt I expected it to be thicker but this was the thinnest smoothie we made.  It was also kind of sour…

4) The One With the Antioxidants
(Promises to be a filling smoothie that is rich in anti-oxidants from both the green tea and the blueberries)

  • Microwave 3 tablespoons waterthen leave to soak for 3 mins with a green tea bag.  Mix with 2 tablespoons of honey
  • Blend:
  • 1 handful blueberries,
  • 1 banana 
  • 3/4 cup almond milk 
  • Add the tea/honey and blend again

This smoothie promises to be rich in anti-oxidants from the green tea and the blueberries as well as being filling, providing you energy throughout the morning.
My Review…
This tasted a whole lot better than I expected it too and was a great way to get some green tea in my diet considering I don’t particularly like the taste.  It was very easy to drink although a little sweet for my liking, I feel like you should definitely measure the honey to taste.  But yeah, this could be quickly put together in a morning.

Sister’s Review…
It was wayyy too sweet – I tasted nothing but sweetness.  Put less honey in, because I wouldn’t drink it with that much again.

5) The Super Green One

(Promises to be filling, with plenty of vitamin C and vitamin A)

  • Blend together:
  • 1 banana
  • 1 sliced kiwi
  • 1 handful “frozen greens” (a bag found in the Sainsburys freezer section including kale, spinach, mango, kiwi, avocado, and a hint of lime and wheatgrass)
  • Half cup coconut water

My Review…
I was excited for this one because the green smoothie by “NAKED” is probably my favourite smoothie and I was hoping for something similar.  However, this tasted like greenness… I don’t know how to describe it… it was a bland, nondescript vegetable flavour and I was not amused.

Sister’s Review…
The smoothie somehow managed to burn my mouth… I don’t know how that was possible.  I smelt banana, tasted kiwi… vaguely… Honestly it just wasn’t very nice

    I’m how the green one managed to burn your sisters mouth 😂😂 anyway this was super interesting!! I wanna try the sweet green tea one lol
