Around this time last year, I started bullet journalling because I researched into it and honestly the idea of a custom journal really appealed to me. I had just started blogging and made a resolution to stay organised at University (Spoiler alert: wasn’t the best at sticking to it) and I wanted everything in one place. Thus, the bullet journal of a student blogger was born.
I’ve just about finished what I want for 2018 in mine, so I thought I’d share this years layout and whether things have changed/what I’m keeping the same. I like to keep my bullet journal relatively simplebecause I’m not the best drawer and if I’m going to design something I’ll want it to be perfect, and that takes a lot of time which I don’t have. So, here’s the simple girl’s guide to bullet journal’s I suppose…
I’ve used the same things from last year because I’m trying to be less wasteful, and also they still worked perfectly and I had lots of pages left to it made a lot of sense. My bullet journalling “kit” consists of:
The Title Page
I wanted something big to separate my 2018 journal content from last year’s, so I made sure created a double page spread. Write now it seems pretty plain, and just has a massive “2018” in the middle, but by the end of the year I hope to fill it with my new experiences. Every time something new, life changing, or exciting happens this year I’ll write it on the page around the 2018, so the idea is that by the end of the year I’ll have a word-cloud summing up my year.
Not only does it separate my new year, but it will give me something to smile and reminisce at by the end of 2019.
My Blogging Calendar
I tested this out last year and it genuinely saved my life when it came to blogging. I drew out a grid for each month of the year (each month taking up a double page) in order to keep track of what I’m blogging. I write in the subject matter of the post for each day I’m posting, with a space to tick them off when the photo’s been posted, and another space to tick off when the post has been scheduled.
This allows me to easily schedule in advance, keep track of what I still need to photograph/edit a thumbnail for, and figure out what posts go best where. Because of what I’m like, I also colour-code my posts with the fine-liners, writing in my “normal posts” in orange, tag posts in pink, award posts in blue, collab posts in magenta, series posts in green, and sponsored posts in purple. This allows me have a very quick visual of what subject content I’m overdoing/lacking in, which means I can keep my posts varied. This is probably my favourite section of my bullet journal.
Down the side of the calendar I also have 3 lists: A key (For all my colour codes), a place to list the different series’ I’ve touched on during the month (Again, to make sure that my content is varied), and a list of any brands that I may have worked with that month (To keep track). These just add to the organisation and make everything a bit neater for me; it’s like tying everything up in a little bow.
My Year in Pixels
I’ve seen this around quite a lot and honestly it seemed like a cute idea. Last year I had my project 2017, where I tried to focus on remaining positive as much as I could throughout 2017, and this seemed like a good follow up! You make a grid of the 365 days of the year (Sounds daunting, but when you separate it by months it really isn’t), and then colour-code each emotion, and fill each day in with the colour (emotion) you felt the most. The idea is that by the end of the year you can look at the colours and almost track your year through emotions, which I think is a really cute idea.
I read Jade Mayhead’s Bullet Journal Set Up and she had a year in pixels, and colour coded the emotions to the characters in Inside Out, which I thought was a really cute creative idea! I did the same (yellow for joy, purple for fear, blue for sadness, red for anger), but then I replaced the other ones with emotions that are more common in my life: low energy (grey) and productivity (green). I spent quite a lot of 2017 being exhausted because I like to overwork myself, so I was hoping by tracking my low energy, I can draw attention to it and aim to reduce/overcome it. Honestly, I hope I keep this up because I’m really excited to see how this looks by the end of the year! I’ll keep you updated on here or on my Instagram.
At the bottom of the page, I had a little square of free space from where my key had ended, so I thought I’d put a little quote (Because I’m not artsy enough to draw pictures). I wrote “Learn how to dance in the rain”, paraphrasing one of my favourite quotes:
“Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.”
Last year I kept track of books I’d read, films watched, restaurants visited and live theatre seen in order topush myself to experience new things. This year I’ve sort of done the same, but stuck to films I’ve watched, restaurants I’ve visited and blogger events I’ve been to, because these are the ones I care about the most at the moment.
As I wrote in my goals for 2018 post I want to see more films in the cinema, so I’d say that the “New Movies” page is one of the most important for me.
My 18 for 2018
I wrote a whole post on how there are 18 things I want to do during 2018 but I like to also write my goals in my bullet journal so I can physically tick them off (It makes me feel more satisfied).
As well as this, I have a list of my pipe dreams: the big, over the top, highly unlikely things that I want to accomplish at some point in my life. Some of them I always envisioned in my future, and some of them are recent ones that I never imagined would happen. I wrote them down in my bullet journal because, as I wrote in the lessons I learnt in 2017 post, if you want something, you have to go out and get it, so this year I want to be a lot better at putting my plans into action and making things happen. I’m keeping these private because they’re really special and important to me, but I’ll let you know if I actually achieve them! (Trust me, if I achieve even one of these there will definitely be posts about them!)
And there you have it! After bullet journalling last year I feel like I’m way more in control of what works and doesn’t work for me and I can’t wait to keep it up this year! I keep it simple, and stick to the basic stuff as I’m very busy, but obviously bullet journals are personal so it all comes down to what works for you.
