What Motivates Me?

What Motivates Me?

A few months ago, I found myself with no real answer when my friend asked what motivates me when it comes to blogging and ideas.  In all honesty, coming up with ideas has never been a forced process for me.  Perhaps it’s because I have no niche, or because I literally just started this as a reflection of me.  You can’t exactly run out of ideas when your blogs about you and, well, you live your own life.  I still don’t exactly run out of ideas, but with a whopping 240 posts, it can be hard to keep yourself going.   Honestly, with a hobby like blogging, where the initial stages involve a lot of work for very little pay off, you have to learn to be your own motivator.  So, I thought I’d take a look into different things that motivate me.

It’s totally about money, right?

Yes, I have mentioned before that I make a bit of money through my blog (You can find out how much here).  However, money is definitely not what motivates me with this.  I’ve never really considered blogging full time.  I may be slightly introverted, but I’d go stir crazy staying home alone everyday doing this.  It’s nice making money through this, and I either reinvest it in my blog (Like I did with this big change), or put it in savings.  It works effectively as a part time job, giving me a flexible method of income alongside uni.

It sounds cheesey, but if I wasn’t making anything I’d still blog.  I have mentioned many a time that I didn’t even know you could make money when I started.  For me, blogging is the cake and icing, and the money is the sprinkles; it’s not needed for my enjoyment, but it’s a nice little extra.

Then… It’s about the recognition?

In the grand scheme of it, I am a very tiny blogger.  I have been recognised a couple of times at events by other bloggers, but I never did this to be a “famous blogger”.  In fact, I think I’d be terrible if I made it big.  I’m so awkward around new people and it probably comes across really rude…  Knowing me I’d freak out at someone saying hi in the street and next thing I know, every drama channel on the internet is talking about how I hate my “fans”.

Ohhh… So it’s about the free stuff?

Rant time: I absolutely hate the notion that the stuff bloggers get is “free”.  Most brand deals that I take require a lot of negotiation of terms, photography, and a post I’ve spent a lot of time on.  They’re the result of being somewhat “business savvy” and being able to “sell myself”.  Every review I do, I go into as much details as possible.  In fact, my posts involving “free stuff” tend to take twice as long as posts like this.  For example, this one here took months, and this one took around 9-12 hours.  Yes, I do find it very cool that I don’t have to pay for things.  And yes, there is a lot of satisfaction and glamour assosciated with PR packages/events.  However, I hate the idea that it’s just a bunch of stuff being handed at me for no reason.  I’ve worked so hard for this, and built everything from scratch.

Anyway, tangent over.  It is true that working towards brand deals motivates me a little bit.  But not because of the “free stuff”.  It’s to do with the validation that comes with them; I know that somebody appreciated my work enough to want me to work with them.  However, much like the money, I would definitely do it without it.

Then… The stats? The cool website?  What is it?!

In all honesty, my motivation comes down to love and pride.  When I first started it was this brand new thing that I loved to write on.  However, now the novelty’s worn off, I’m still here because I’m proud of my growth.  This blog is probably the longest thing I’ve comitted to and I built it completely from scratch.  At this stage, it is my baby and I want to grow and nurture is as long as possible.  I love doing this, and every break I take reminds me of how much I love it.  I do this for me, and I do this because I’m proud.

Everyone has different things that motivates them in all aspects of life, be it success, money, fame, and so forth.  I guess, if you had to strip mine back it would be the success, in the sense that I want to see how far I can grow this and make it a success.

I’d love to know what motivates you in different aspects of your life, let me know in the comments!

Lots of love,

Jas xx

I love what you said about the blog being the cake and the icing and the money is the sprinkles! That resonates so much for me. I kept a blog for years that I eventually felt I had to shut down when my health got really bad. I’ve been writing again for a year now. I haven’t reached back up to earning money or receiving products but I just enjoy it so much, I don’t care about any of that anymore! 🙂

This was a really nice read and I think it’s awesome that you continue to work on it even with other things going on in your life! Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Blogging is a lot of fun but it’s also a lot of work too! Yes we might be sent things for free to review but we have to put work into it – pictures, blog posts, reviewing fairly, social media.

Loved this post! Your points are so true, people assume it’s easy and it’s a great money maker but actually it is so much more and you need to love it. Otherwise you are not doing it for the right reasons xxxx

I LOVE this post, a lot of bloggers do this for the money and the stats (which is perfectly fine) but I love reading posts from people who do this because they purely enjoy doing it!

This is really interesting Jas! I’m the same, I never even knew you could make money from blogging when I started. I did it as I really love writing and taking photos & keeping an online diary. If the brand opportunities were taken away, I’d still blog as much as I do. Also, just watched your YouTube video on earning money through blogging. I really love your natural relaxed and chatty style, your video is really interesting & enjoyable to watch. Need to check out your YouTube channel properly soon! 💖 xx

I feel proud of my little corner of the internet too, I’ve worked so hard on it and I am motivated every time I get a new comment or reach a new milestone in page views. As much as getting paid and the free stuff is great, having that pride in my blog and in myself makes so much more of a difference to my motivation!
    Thanks for sharing! xx Naomi

I hate that there are certain assumptions when it comes to bloggers. There seems to be this idea that we’re all in it for the same thing and that’s really not the case.
I blog for me and to share my thoughts, feelings and experiences. I don’t blog for free stuff, fame or money but hey, if they happen then that’s a lovely perk. It’s up to the individual to decide what motivates them.

Exactly! There’s absolutely nothing wrong with doing it for money, but people need to remember that we’re all individuals and we all have our own reasons!

I found this really informative. I also appreciated your YouTube video on making money off of a blog. I just started my own blog maybe a week ago and it is more for saying the things I struggle to say out loud as an introvert so between your notes about reasons you do this and being an introvert, it made me think. I appreciate the length of this blog post as strange as that sounds lol. I know people tend to prefer shorter posts but I prefer it when people really sort out a full idea.

I love this! I don’t think people realise that a lot of the time you put in a lot of work for what can be next to no return (or literally no return) in the beginning. To be honest, if you asked me why I do it, I don’t think I could give you a clear answer? Sure, I love it (probably the main reason), and the odd sponsored post is nice, as is the free stuff, but I don’t think any of that would matter if there wasn’t the sense of community. I love that you’re so proud of your space! x

Thanks Sophie! Honestly, sponsored posts and free things are nice, but you’ve got to be able to have your own things that motivate you! The community is a great part of the blogging world!

I like to read posts from other bloggers talking about their blogging journey. I have barely been blogging about 4 months now. Your journey is inspiring to me. I wonder where I will be after 240 posts.

It’s important to figure out what motivates us. It’s essential to keep us going. Money isn’t everything – it is great that you know that! Oh man, I wish things we get are truly free but time isn’t free! I appreciate that your motivation came from love and pride. Keep being yourself ♥

Love this post! I haven’t made a penny off my blog but that definitely doesn’t discourage me because it’s not why I do it. I found it so confusing starting out how every ‘advice’ post seemed to surround profiting off your blog but all I wanted to know was something simple. Motivation is so different for each person and a lot of people just seem to make the assumption that all bloggers blog for money when it’s so not true!
