Short Girl Tries Maxi Dress*

Short Girl Tries Maxi Dress*

Hey, have you met me?  I’m short.

I’ve taken height to be a large part of my identity for quite some time now.  I was always the shorter one out of my friends, the one that never seemed to grow past 5″2.  Even now, at a slightly taller 5″4.1 (The .1 counts, okay?!), I take my height into account when it comes to a lot of things, especially fashion.  For as long as I remember, I had rules when it came to what complimented my short frame, and every skirt or dress I bought had to be mini.  My legs were short enough as they were, and a maxi dress would only cut them off more.I'm living the dream in this orange floral maxi dress

However, as I delve further into the world of fashion, I’ve been looking to experiment more.  I’ve been loving jumpsuits, culotte style trousers, crop tops… A bunch of things I never would have considered before.  But the one thing I hadn’t really tried yet was the infamous maxi skirt/dress.

Then opportunity struck…

When Boohoo gave me the opportunity to try one of their maxi dresses*, I felt that now was the time to try something out of my comfort zone.  They had a pretty great selection and, as a maxi dress virgin, I didn’t really know where to start.  I felt that I’d ease in with a dip hem dress, because showing some leg would counteract the fact that I don’t have much to begin with.

I ended up with the orange Katie Off The Shoulder Floral maxi dress, mainly because I’m really trying with the colours at the moment and also because I feel like off the shoulder styled things counteract my broad shoulders.  On arriving, it was pretty much exactly how it looked online, and I excitedly threw it in my bag to rock on the streets of Rome.

So, how did it go?

Sitting down in the Boohoo maxi dressIn short, I absolutely loved it.

It trailed behind me, exactly like a reverse cape and I felt like the flamenco dancer emoji.  Every time I sat down it, it flowed beneath me and I felt like such a princess.  I love my short little sundresses, I think that they look super cute and flowy.  However, in this maxi dress I felt elegant and regal, as well as super mature, which isn’t a bad feeling for someone who’s just turned 21.  There’s nothing better than clothes that make you feel special, and this was one that really did the job for me.

It didn’t cut off my short legs!

The second I tried it on, all my height specific worries disappeared.  Maybe it helped that I paired it with a wedge, but honestly I feel that I would have been fine either way.  My worries about maxi dresses making me look even smaller were absolutely not needed. If anything, I felt tall(er) and elegant as I strode down the streets of Italy in my fancy new floral maxi.

Would I wear it again?the boohoo maxi dress makes me feel incredibly confident.

Yes.  Most definitely yes.  In fact, I wanted to re-wear it the next day but I felt that was a bit too much.  It wasn’t too clingy, it allowed room for my pizza baby and it definitely looks like it’s worth more than the £25 that it is!  I’m probably going to wear it to a uni formal at some point as well as fancy events during the summer.  Also, I could definitely pair it with a denim jacket for a transitional Autumn look.

Boohoo, you conquered my fear

I’m most definitely going to experiment more with maxi skirts and dresses!  I looked nice in it, but most importantly I loved how it made me feel.  I want more of that feeling, and I’m definitely going to have a massive browse of their range.

Thank you so much to everyone for reading this, and to Boohoo for sending me the dress and working with me on this post! What did you think of this?  Let me know in the comments as I want to do more fashion posts but I’m trying to find my style (pun not intended).

Lots of love,

Jas xx

I’m exactly the same with maxi dresses as I am only around 5’3! But I’ve found a few gems in my time, and definitely, the style like yours is perfect for smaller girls like us!

How exciting that boohoo sent you the dress!
    Great post!

This is a really lovely dress, Jas. I’ve always been put off buying maxi dresses because of my size as well. I’m around the same height as you but I think a style like this with the cut out is really flattering for us short folk! Great post! I do love Boohoo, I buy all my clothes from there 🙂 xxx

I laughed out loud at “Pizza baby”!! This dress is pretty and it looks amazing on you! I am not a massive fan of normal basic maxi dresses but I love the bardot style and the length! The colour is gorgeous too. I am glad you have gotten over your fear! And congrats on the collab with Boohoo! xx

Hahaha I’m glad you enjoyed my talk of pizza babies, the struggle was real during my trip! Yeah, I’m also not a fan of the basic maxi dress because I feel like they always look bad on me, but I loved this one!

It makes me laugh so much when I read posts about people being short and then it turns out they’re actually TALLER THAN ME 😭😂 I’m at least a whole inch smaller than you but to be fair I spend the majority of my time in shoes that have soles as thick as bricks to counteract it… This dress looks so wonderful on you, the style and colour completely flatters your figure and face and it’s so perfect for all year round! It is the absolute best finding a dress that you feel like a queen in and I’m so happy you have!!

Hahaha if it helps, this is my height post growth spurt! I spend the majority of my time in heeled boots, so I guess we both hide it 😉 and thank you so much! I really love the dress
