Though Blogmas may have stressed me out, it was pretty great for finding new content ideas. One of which I particularly enjoyed was my Thoughts on The Princess Switch post, because I finally found a way to capitalise on my Netflix addiction. I (binge) watch a lot of TV and a lot of movies, but I never knew how to write about them in a “me” style… Here we are. And, what better way to continue the series with the creepy but compelling sensation that was ‘You’ on Netflix?
**Warning: This post contains (very vague and not all that detailed) spoilers**
What is ‘You’?
‘You’ (Based on the book of the same name) follows the oh-so-creepy story of Joe, played by Penn Badgley – your favourite neighbourhood gossip girl. Essentially, boy meets girl in bookshop. Boy becomes infatuated and believes that he is entitled to girl’s love. Boy is a creepy murderous stalker who stops at no lengths to ensure that he gets girl. You know, your typical romcom.
I’ve been following ‘You’ for a while, since I saw the trailer back in the summer. I feel like it’s been out in the US for a while? And honestly, after a while I just assumed the UK were never going to get it. But, there it was on Netflix on the 26th December, and there I was binge watching the whole series in a day on the 28th. It’s a psychological thriller – which is entirely not my type of film or movie. However, I enjoy Penn Badgely’s work, and Shay Mitchell (who I adore) was also in it, so I had to give it a go.
What did I think?
Well, during the 10 episodes, I thought a lot of things. ‘You’ was an intense rollercoaster and I seriously could not take my eyes off of it. The cast was brilliant, the script and book were genius, and the twist at the end was a great set up for season 2. I loved it, but there sure was a lot that ran through my mind as I watched it…
1) Penn Badgley looks great
He looks the same way he looked in the early seasons of Gossip Girl. I liked the way he looked in the early seasons of Gossip Girl. Also, how has he not aged since the days of Gossip Girl, Easy A and John Tucker Must Die?! They were all 9/10 years ago! I applaud you, Penn.
2) Why is he so charming?! I’m supposed to be disgusted.
Like I said, I think he’s a great actor. This was worrying with a show like this, because although I was incredibly disturbed by his character’s actions, I couldn’t help but root for him a little bit (I know, I’m disappointed in myself). It was really conflicting watching him be a truly horrible person and yet wanting the best for him at times? But I love a good moral dilemma and an unlikeable protagonist, so this only added more depth to the show for me.
3) Why is all this stalking so… easy?
Everything that he’s done has been so simple. There’s been an absense of any discernible hacking skills or superb knowledge, he just… knew where to look. Social media has made it so easy for people to stalk you… Be careful what you put on the internet folks (Says the blogger who puts her life online…)
4) Beck is my new hair inspiration.
My hair is currently at a length it’s never been before (I never grow out my hair) and I’m enjoying learning how to deal with it. You know who has my hair length and never had a bad hairstyle? Guinevere Beck. She’s become my new hair inspiration – in fact I went out that day with a hairstyle like hers. It received compliments.
5) I could look at Shay Mitchell’s face all day. I’m glad she’s in this!
Peach may be annoying, but Shay Mitchell’s a good actress. I haven’t seen her in anything since Pretty Little Liars so this is cute!
6) Guess that’s over. Nevermind.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
7) Be careful who you let into your life.
Imagine dying because your friend decided to date a creepy murderous stalker. It wasn’t even someone you meant to let into your life. That’s just rude. I won’t lie, I felt personally attacked by just the concept of this. My friends better pick good people!
8) John Stamos is in this!
Yes, love myself some John Stamos! Even if he has that super ugly beard…
9) Oh, his character’s also vaguely creepy and is probably going to die… Never mind.
This show just doesn’t want me to love anything.
10) So… are there no positive male characters in this?
Joe’s a creep (obviously), then there was her douchey boyfriend, her predatory professor, her boundary breaking counsellor, the neighbour’s abusive boyfriend, the predatory writer guy… Even Paco let the team down at the end there (With a fairly good, misunderstood reason, so I guess I forgive him). Come on, give me at least one normal guy.
11) So moral of the story: trust no one.
How am I ever meant to date someone new again? He was so normal on the surface and he was out there killing her friends… And he seriously believed it was the right thing for her. What if I also pick the wrong person? What if that wrong person is already in my life? I both love and hate things that make me think like this.
Have you seen ‘You’? What did you think of it? Are you excited for a second season? Let me know in the comments!
Lots of love,
