It’s summer! And as the temperature rises, so does the urge to get your legs out. However, that’s not always the most fun activity for people… It certainly wasn’t for me for a long time. As someone with a big butt (That I wouldn’t change for the world) and large thighs (That I probably would), shorts season has never been my favourite and finding the right shorts has been an impossible task. But then last summer I was introduced to mom shorts and my life has never been the same.
The shortened little sister to mom jeans. Essentially, much like mom jeans are known for being high-waisted and a lot more forgiving than your regular skinny jeans, these are (typically) denim shorts that are a little baggier and high-waisted. Whilst still short, they also tend to come out a little longer, so you have no worry of your buttcheeks hanging out.
Up until last year, I’d never heard of mom shorts. In fact, I’m not really sure if they were a thing before that (Please let me know if I’m wrong). However, one day I was watching Lucy Wood’s video on how to survive summer when you’re a little bit fat, and she brought them up. Whilst in New Look shopping for my trip to Chicago last year, I needed shorts and her video rang in my ear. Without a second thought, I marched to their shorts section, found a pair labelled “mom” in my size and let them become a part of my life. Since that day, I have had no regrets.
When I first tried them on, I was in the midst of stress packing, so it was a quick check-they-fit-and-move-on moment. However, I then stepped out of the building wearing them in Chicago, with a bunch of people who had never met me before that week, and I had a surprising number of compliments. I’ve never had anyone specifically compliment a pair of denim shorts that I’ve worn because denim shorts as a whole are pretty boring. However, these brought all the compliments to the yard, and I’d never felt better.
I’m a lot more confident with my body than I once was. However, that doesn’t mean I’m 100% there. More often than not, I find myself staring at my stomach and my thighs and wishing that they were smaller. Usually, this stops me throwing on a pair of shorts and they feel too revealing. However, these have now become my go-to short bottom when I’m feeling gross about myself. They suck you in at the stomach a little without feeling uncomfortable, and their wider bottom works to even out your leg proportions. I cannot praise them enough. Mom shorts have become the only denim shorts that I’ll buy.
Obviously, shorts aren’t exactly the hardest thing to style. I’m pretty sure you all know how to throw shorts together with an outfit. However, my favourite way with these is to keep it basic. I love pairing them with cropped tops as I actually feel comfortable in cropped T-shirts because none of my stomach will show and the shorts contain my pouch. I also love tying a T-shirt up with them, as pictured, or wearing a unisex T-shirt with a french tuck.
They seem to have become a proper thing now, so they’re available in most places. I bought the pair in the pictures from New Look last year, so they don’t have the exact pair, but this one’s pretty similar. I also recently brought this pair in black which you will most likely see me style on my Instagram during the summer.
I’m a strong believer that fashion should make you feel good. Your clothes should create a balance between comfort and confidence. Mom shorts are my summer staple for that exact reason. And thus, ends my ode to mom shorts.
